The First Internet TV Guide
Prior to the multicast of the IETF standards meeting in
November at Washington DC, the Steves - Casner and Deering -
and the "MBONE/IETF-TV crew" distributed on the network the
first Internet TV Guide.
The Guide announced the 'cast of two sessions in parallel, on "IETF
Channel 1" and "IETF Channel 2". On both channels there could
be three concurrent multicast streams:
- low-rate audio (GSM encoding; approx 16 kbps)
- "normal"-rate audio (PCM encoding; approx. 70 kbps)
- video (one of two encodings; approx. 25 to 128 kbps)
The audio is originated by the vat program. Listners can use vat or
any other vat-compatible application to listen in and talk back. Information
on doing this is available as mbone/faq.txt from <venera.isi.edu>.
The Guide contained the multicast addresses, ports, and TTLS used
with those programs, for each type of multicast stream. (These are
the Internet equivalent of radio frequencies.) A partial listing of
this first Guide is shown below.

Some of the channel 1 programming was also scheduled to be replayed by
tape delay from 2300 to 0800.
The criteria used to select the sessions to be transmitted were
- all plenary sessions
- sessions related to A/V teleconferencing or multicast
(avt, rem-conf, mospf, idmr)
- sessions related to IPv7 (select, pip, tuba, ipae, sip)
- miscellaneous sessions, by request
Participants were advised to keep microphones muted and video transmissions
disabled during the plenaries and working group sessions, unless or until
invited to respond by the chair of the session.
During plenary sessions, when there is only one audio stream,
two video streams wre used on the same video multicast channel, one with
a higher than normal TTL, to allow people who would normally receive only
two audio streams to receive one audio plus one video instead.
